About the CISM World Summer Games
Since 1995, the Military World Games have been held every four years by the Military World Sports Association, following the example of the Olympic Games in summer and every four years in winter since 2010. The Summer Games always take place one year before the Summer Olympic Games, the Winter Games are held in the same year.
In 1994, the Military World Sports Association decided for the first time that, in addition to the World Championships in the various sports held annually since the Second World War, a major sporting event should also be held in accordance with the rules of the IOC. The first summer games were held in Rome to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
CISM in Rio de Janeiro
When football legend Pelé lights the symbolic fire of the Fifth World Military Games in the João Havelange Stadium in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, the megacity under the Sugar Loaf will experience a first whiff of Olympia. At least that’s what the leaders of the local organizing committee and the CISM military world sports association want.
With a firework of rhythms and colours, the audience is to be inspired by the sporting competitions, which will be held at numerous locations in the metropolis area until 24 June. Some 4,000 soldiers from 112 countries have come to the southeast of Brazil to compete for gold, silver and bronze in 15 Olympic and five military disciplines.
The “Military World Games”, which are held every four years in the style of the Olympic Games, were first held in Rome in 1995. At that time around 4,000 members of the military from 93 countries fought for the coveted medals in memory of the Second World War, which ended 50 years earlier. Other “Games of Peace” were held in Zagreb, Croatia, in 1999, in Catania, Sicily, again in Italy, in 2003, and in Hyderabad, India, in 2007. Last year also saw the first winter games of this kind in Aosta in the Italian Alps.
With Rio de Janeiro, the umbrella organisation CISM had recourse to a venue that had been tried and tested at major events, most recently the “Cidade maravilhosa” had been a successful host at the Pan-American Games in 2007. On that occasion, the João Havelange Olympic Stadium was built, which is not only the venue for the current Games, but also hosts the opening and closing ceremonies.
And for this, around 1,200 children and young people aged between 12 and 17 years have rehearsed intensively for months to transform the arena into a world of the sea, forests and toy soldiers for the 35,000 spectators in the stadium – including Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff – and millions of television viewers around the globe.
The first part of the opening ceremony, which lasts several hours, will be dedicated to Brazil’s natural beauty and its diverse flora and fauna. The costumes, designed by a carnival specialist, will amaze the audience. The main attraction, the organisers are sure, is a 22-metre-long moving snake, but schools of fish, dolphins, anteaters, butterflies and many other animals are also supposed to symbolize nature as detailed “fantasias”.
