About the World Aquatics Championships

World Swimming Championships have been held by the International Swimming Federation FINA since 1973. At first there was no uniform cycle. Since 2001, the World Championships have been held every two years in odd years.

The World Championships focus on swimming competitions in the 50-metre swimming pool. In addition, competitions are held in water jumping, water polo, synchronized swimming and long-distance swimming, so that the events resemble real “world games” of swimming. Due to the large number of participants, participating countries and competitions, the World Swimming Championships after the Olympic Games, the Football World Cup and the World Athletics Championships are among the largest events in world sport.

World Aquatics Championships 2017 in Budapest

For the various disciplines at the Swimming World Championships, the organisers have in some cases selected special competition venues. The cliff jumpers enjoy the best view. From 14 to 30 July, the Swimming World Championships in Budapest will be about titles and medals. Some of the athletes will fight for world championship honours in front of large backdrops and from lofty heights. The open water swimmers are challenged 130 kilometres outside the Hungarian capital.

DUNA ARÉNA: The heart of the World Swimming Championships was built between 2015 and 2017 and lies directly on the Danube. This is where the pool swimming and jumping competitions take place. The water sports complex has 5000 permanent seats. However, the spectator capacity will be increased for the World Championships – according to the International Swimming Federation (FINA), more than 15,000 people can be seated in the arena with the help of temporary grandstands. After the World Cup, the pools will also be available to the Hungarian population.

LAKE BALATON: The open water athletes swim past the lake promenade of Balatonfüred in the fight for bronze, silver and gold. The small health resort is located about 130 kilometers southwest of Budapest. The start will be on 15 July with the 5-kilometre men’s race, the last of a total of seven open water competitions will follow six days later over 25 kilometres. The coach of the German open water swimmers is looking forward to a special atmosphere. “The atmosphere is always good, because open water swimming is much more important in Hungary than in Germany,” said Stefan Lurz to the German Press Agency.

BATTYHYÁNY PLATZ: Also outside and with a spectacular view is the competition site of the cliff jumpers. Directly on the banks of the Danube and opposite the Parliament, the women jump from 20 metres and the men from 27 metres into specially constructed pools. Cliff diving (High Diving) is the youngest world championship discipline – in 2013 the sport celebrated its world championship premiere in Barcelona.

CITY FOREST: A castle, the historic Széchenyi bath and more than a dozen monuments – Budapest’s city forest already has a lot to offer. Another attraction will be added during the World Cup. In the immediate vicinity of Heldenplatz, the synchronized swimming competitions take place in specially equipped pools.

ALFRÉD-HAJÓS-COMPLEX: The traditional facility on Margaret Island in the middle of the Danube is the venue for the water polo matches at the World Cup. In Hungary, the country of the record Olympic champion, water polo is a really big thing. The athletes can look forward to full halls and a great atmosphere. 7000 fans can be seated around the pool during the World Cup.
